Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity

The Rudd Center for Food Policy and Health promotes solutions to food insecurity, poor diet quality, and weight bias through research and policy.

The Rudd Center was founded in 2005 by Kelly Brownell, PhD, at Yale, with a contribution from the Rudd Foundation. Key initiatives were launched as part of the Rudd Center’s work, based on a core philosophy of creating the greatest impact by working through important institutions that affect food policy and public health, such as schools and communities, government agencies, scientific and medical communities, and the media. This approach has distinguished the Rudd Center as a multi-disciplinary policy research center dedicated to providing high-level expertise and guidance on obesity prevention, food marketing to children, food assistance programs, food and nutrition-related policies, and policies to reduce weight bias against individuals with obesity.

Council on American-Islamic Relations-Connecticut (CAIR-CT)

CAIR Connecticut (CAIR-CT, Inc) is the state chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) the largest Muslim civil rights organization in the United States. Since its establishment in 1994, CAIR has worked to promote a positive image of Islam and Muslims in America. Through media relations, education and advocacy, CAIR works to make sure a Muslim voice is represented in civil society. Through our work, CAIR seeks to empower American Muslims and encourage their participation in political and social activism.

There is a significant opportunity gap in Fairfield County; the majority of public school students in Bridgeport will fall behind and will be unable to achieve success in school and in life. Connect-Us programs are designed to reach the bottom 90% of inner-city youth who may not be as accomplished or motivated, and provide opportunities to make them more successful – which can have a much greater societal impact.

New Horizons Domestic Violence Services

New Horizons works to end the cycle of abuse and break the silence of domestic violence. Through victim defined advocacy and a trauma informed approach, our advocates strive to provide services to victims of abuse tailored around each individual’s unique situation. They believe that everyone should be treated with dignity and respect regardless of their race, gender and sexual orientation, all while achieving individualized success and empowerment, leading to a brighter tomorrow.

SEIU Healthcare 1199NE (New England Health Care Employees Union)

Taking action together has always been how health care workers have won improvements — whether we’re in contract negotiations for a raise, at work defending someone being treated unfairly, or lobbying at the State Capitol for safe staffing levels. Often called “my favorite union” by Martin Luther King Jr., District 1199 is a bold, democratic labor organization with a long activist tradition. Since the New England branch of 1199 was established in 1968, they’ve united more than 20,000 workers to win a voice at work to demand improvements for people in nursing homes, hospitals, state and community-based health care services. They are a strong voice for health care workers and the people we care for every day.

National Organization for Women – Connecticut Chapter (CT NOW)

CT NOW believes that the personal is indeed political; therefore it strives to impact and change attitudes, beliefs, and policies that harm all women by fighting for political, economic, and social justice through education, organizing and action. This purpose includes, but is not limited to, equal rights and responsibilities in all aspects of citizenship, public service, employment, education, family life, and it includes freedom from discrimination because of race, gender or perceived gender, ethnicity, origin, age, marital status, sexual preference/orientation, physical ability/health status, or parenthood.

Pro-Choice Connecticut Foundation

The Pro-Choice Connecticut Foundation is our organization’s research, education and outreach arm. Our mission is to support and protect, as a fundamental right and value, an individual’s freedom to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including abortion, through education, training, organizing, and public policy.

Connecticut Women’s Education and Legal Fund

CWEALF has advanced women’s rights and opportunities in Connecticut since 1973. CWEALF is a statewide nonprofit organization that advocates for and empowers women and girls in Connecticut, especially those who are under-resourced or marginalized. We work to create an equitable society where women and girls thrive.

During its first decade, CWEALF focused on impact litigation, participating in cases involving equal pay, equal credit and sex discrimination. Throughout the years, CWEALF also played a significant role in policy victories such as marriage equality, discrimination protections based on gender identity, birth control access, earned sick days, and protections for survivors of sexual and domestic violence.
